AEW commentator Tony Schiavone has spoken about recreating his trademark Sting call for the legendary wrestler’s son, Steven Borden, and how he made the decision spontaneously.
An endearing part of Sting’s career was Schiavone’s iconic “It’s Sting” call during their days in WCW, and he recently revived it for Sting’s son, Steven Borden, calling him “It’s Steven.” Schiavone spoke about the decision on his appearance on “Battleground Podcast,” explaining that he initially hesitated because he didn’t want to disrespect Sting by using a similar call for his son.
“I was thinking, ‘Should I really do this?’ It’s one of those snap decisions that you make, and I didn’t want to disparage his dad, and I don’t think I ever could because I’ve been tied to his career. But I thought it was the right thing to do because the kid is, you know, trying to make his way in the business, looks good. Hell, when he talks, he sounds exactly like his dad if you heard that interview that he did or that promo he did with Darby, and he’s such a great athlete,” he said. “So, when he comes out, it’s kind of one of those snap decisions. Should I do it or shouldn’t I? Thought, what the hell? And I did it. So, I don’t know. Maybe Tony [Khan] will make me do it now.”
Borden’s rise in AEW has been swift, as he featured on television less than a year after his first-ever professional wrestling match.
The young star is finding his footing in the pro wrestling business and has been thrust into the limelight in AEW, where he recently wrestled his first match on pay-per-view at All Out. The outing, though, was a scary one for Borden, as he was knocked out during his tag team match, which was subsequently called off. Thankfully for him and AEW, he appears to have avoided a serious injury, with Tony Khan confirming that he is conscious and that his CT scans were clear.
