Abdullah Mason’s first world title fight has sparked debate after television viewership figures were released for his victory over Albert Bell on the July 4 holiday weekend.
According to viewership numbers shared by EverythingBoxing, Mason’s WBO lightweight title fight peaked at 820,000 viewers across TNT, truTV and DAZN, while the full event averaged 661,000 viewers across the three platforms.
The figures quickly divided opinion among boxing fans on social media. Some described the audience as underwhelming compared with the larger numbers Top Rank often produced during its ESPN partnership. Others argued the ratings were respectable given the circumstances surrounding the event.
Unlike many high-profile boxing matches, the promotion featured little controversy or manufactured drama. Mason and Bell largely avoided trash talk during fight week, and Bell entered as a relatively low-profile challenger outside hardcore boxing circles. The card also aired over the Independence Day weekend, traditionally a difficult period for attracting television audiences.
Ironically, the biggest talking point came after the opening bell. Mason retained his unbeaten record by defeating Bell in a finish that divided opinion, with many fans questioning the referee’s decision to stop the contest after Mason pulled Bell to the canvas during an exchange.
Those figures alone don’t settle the debate. Mason has established himself as one of boxing’s brightest young lightweights, but his next appearance against a more recognizable opponent should provide a clearer indication of his ability to attract a television audience as a world champion.
