The Washington Commanders have lost three wide receivers in three weeks.
It’s unbelievable; you don’t want a team making excuses every time they turn around, but isn’t there such a thing as reality?
Terry McLaurin had missed four weeks, came back to play against the Chiefs, caught a touchdown pass, then a very contested pass along the left sideline. But McLaurin was injured on the play, missed the last two games (Seattle, Detroit), and will not play again on Sunday against Miami.
Luke McCaffrey was second in the league in kickoff return average and had caught three touchdown passes, but against Seattle, he broke a collarbone while returning the opening kickoff. McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve, joining Noah Brown. Brown started most of the 2024 season, but went down against the Packers (Week 2) and has not played since.
How about just last week? Commanders’ GM Adam Peters was doing his homework, working hard, and signed former first-round draft choice Treylon Burks. Burks was drafted No. 18 overall by the Tennessee Titans in the 2022 NFL draft. But Burks was released last summer, and Peters, seeing he was available, signed Burks to a contract.
Burks saw his first action for the Commanders in the blowout loss to the Seahawks. Still learning the offense, Burks was in on 50% of the offensive snaps against the Seahawks, was the target on one pass, made the catch, and gained 14 yards.
Last week against the Lions, Burks was targeted three times by Marcus Mariota. Burks looked good, catching all three passes for 58 receiving yards, averaging 19.3 yards per reception. Would you believe Burks then broke a finger, requiring some surgery this week? The young man stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 225 pounds. Is this the place for Burks in the future? No matter how good Burks looked against the Lions, he clearly is not available this week in Madrid, Spain, against the Dolphins.
So this week, the Commanders have signed two receivers from their practice squad, Robbie Chosen and Jacoby Jones, to the active roster. Now it is their turn. Jones is a rookie from UCF who stands 6-3 and weighs 228. You don’t want to place too much pressure on the rookie, but given what has happened to Washington’s receivers this season, who knows what will happen?
The Commanders will most likely not bring back Noah Brown next season, and with McLaurin being more injured than healthy this season, suddenly the receiver roster looks awfully uncertain for 2026. It would be nice if Burks could return and prove himself worthy of being re-signed for 2026.
