The San Antonio Spurs secured a bittersweet 115–102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night at the Frost Bank Center, a win overshadowed by a physical setback for Victor Wembanyama.
The French phenom was forced to the locker room during the second half after sustaining a left rib contusion, an injury that occurred following a heavy collision with Paul George during the opening frames. Before his premature exit, the towering defensive anchor was remarkably efficient, tallying 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting alongside five rebounds and three blocks in just 16 minutes of action.
This medical update carries significant weight for the league’s awards race. To maintain eligibility for Defensive Player of the Year and MVP honors, the Spurs cornerstone must participate in at least one of the final three contests in the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season. While he currently sits at 63 appearances, a 20-minute stint in a forthcoming game would bring his total to the required threshold, aided by a technicality involving his participation in the Emirates NBA Cup final.
Despite lacking the presence of the 22-year-old superstar in the second half, the Spurs improved to 60–19 to open their season-ending four-game homestand. The team coached by Mitch Johnson continues its residency against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, followed by matchups with the Dallas Mavericks on Friday and the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.
While Joel Embiid dominated the interior for the visitors with a 34-point double-double, the 76ers opted not to utilize Turkish big man Adem Bona, who remained on the bench for the duration of the contest.
