Luka Doncic’s selection with the third pick in the NBA Draft has been the subject of much criticism and commentary in recent years.

The Lakers and NBA star was selected behind Deandre Ayton (Phoenix Suns) and Marvin Bagley (Sacramento Kings). At the time, the legendary Vlade Divac was the Kings‘ GM, and he passed on Luka.

On Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast, Divac talked about what they had in mind when selecting Bagley and why he passed on Doncic even though he went to Madrid the previous year.

“I actually went to Madrid to talk to Luka, a year before the draft. So, definitely top on the list”, he said. “But, obviously, it looks like I made a mistake. Luka is an unbelievable uh talent, one of the top players in the league”, Divac confirmed.

“All of my assistants told me that he can play small forward, and I said no, no, Luka is a point guard”, the former Kings GM added on Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast.

“Luka is a coach on the floor. And I felt that if I got Luka, I would have to trade De’Aaron Fox, and I already have a relationship with Fox, and I see he’s a perfect fit for us, a small-market team, and Luka was a big market player”, he concluded about Luka.
