The heavyweight division had already been thrown into total disarray ever since Oleksandr Usyk made the unprecedented move of vacating his remaining alphabet belts. That chaos opened the door for this massive showdown. Entering the night, all eyes were on the 21-year-old prodigy Moses Itauma, who was aiming to surpass Floyd Patterson and become the second youngest heavyweight world champion in boxing history behind Iron Mike Tyson. Instead, it was Filip Hrgovic who authored the ultimate career redemption arc.

The central storyline heading into this clash centered on whether Hrgovic’s world-class toughness and proven granite chin could withstand Itauma’s blistering speed and explosive firepower. Early on, it looked like business as usual for the young phenom. Itauma came out firing sharp combinations, dropping Hrgovic with a heavy counter in round 2. But unlike Dillian Whyte and Jermaine Franklin before him, Hrgovic weathered the storm.

Hrgovic absorbed punishing shots, stayed composed, and began dragging the young powerhouse into deep, uncharted waters. As Itauma’s gas tank steadily drained past the 6th round, Hrgovic took complete control with relentless pressure and clubbing right hands. By the 9th round, an exhausted Itauma was trapped against the ropes under heavy artillery, prompting trainer Ben Davison to throw in the towel to save his fighter.

This edition of Rummy’s Corner provides a full recap and post-fight review of Hrgovic’s dramatic title victory. This is Rummy’s Corner (written, narrated, and produced by Geoffrey Ciani).
