Taking over the outskirts of Paris, the second edition of the Hoop Gambit Festival once more combines Victor Wembanyama’s two ultimate passions.
Held last weekend, the unique summer celebration proved that the San Antonio Spurs center is just as dedicated to the chessboard as he is to the hardwood.
The event featured an action-packed basketball tournament alongside two competitive rapid chess brackets, drawing crowds of sports and strategy enthusiasts alike.
During a media session at the gathering, the sports phenom smiled as he clarified where his true mastery lies. “I am better in basketball than I am in chess, but I love both. Basketball a little bit more,” he stated in a promotional clip, highlighting his well-known devotion to both pastimes.
Wemby took time to interact with fans and test his strategic skills on the board. Throughout the two-day event, he observed many of the intense matchups and eagerly sat down for exhibition games with the younger participants. The kids obviously enjoyed facing the 22-year-old forward-center, rising to the challenge and defeating their much taller opponent in every single encounter.
Looking for a redemption win, the towering NBA star also tried his luck against famous chess players, who proved to be just as formidable as the children.

Having debuted last year, the festival continues to expand, cementing itself as a staple of his offseason routine.
His next stop is playing for France in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers and, from there, the 2026–27 NBA Regular Season with the Spurs.
