The two weight misses created the immediate mess, but Mercado’s matchmaking deserves closer examination.
Why was a 24-year-old talent of Mercado’s caliber being put in with the 37-year-old Tagoe in the first place?
Ryan Garcia thoroughly outboxed Tagoe in a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision in April 2022. Tagoe has fought only twice since and had been inactive for a year, with his previous bout coming in August 2025.
Beating him would have done little for Mercado beyond putting another win on his record.
Mercado recently joined Salita Promotions in partnership with Wynn Records after leaving Matchroom Boxing earlier this year. One of his stated goals was greater activity, but fighting four times per year accomplishes little developmentally if the opposition isn’t forcing him to improve.
With a 19-0 record containing 18 knockouts, Mercado should be getting opponents capable of exposing weaknesses and making him solve problems in the ring. At 24, he doesn’t need to spend several more years being carefully moved against aging names whose best performances came long ago.
A company such as Zuffa Boxing might have provided an interesting alternative considering its willingness to put fighters into demanding matchups without placing as much emphasis on protecting records. There is no evidence Mercado rejected a Zuffa offer, so that comparison goes no further than considering what type of matchmaking might benefit him.
Mercado has the talent to be moved aggressively. His management now needs to match that talent with the opposition.
Staying busy was one reason he changed promoters. Staying busy against fighters he is supposed to destroy isn’t the same thing as moving his career forward.
