A VERTU Trophy match between Stockport County and Wigan Athletic was suspended due to massive rainfall.
The two League One sides were locked in a 1-1 stalemate as the rain poured down at Stockport’s Edgeley Park.
But as it hammered down it became increasingly clear that the pitch was no longer in a playable condition.
Referee Scott Oldham eventually deemed the field too far gone and called for a 15-minute suspension of the match.
Fans in attendance were not pleased with the situation, but could place little blame on the referee given the state of the pitch.
One fan on X predicted: “This game is getting called off. Ball just completely stopped in front of us.”

Some fans were baffled by the referee’s decision to only call the game off temporarily at first.
One joked: “Is he waiting to see if the sun comes out?”
The adverse weather has been causing chaos for fixtures across the Manchester area.
Non-League outfit Wythenshawe FC saw their game abandoned just 16 minutes into their clash with Ramsbottom earlier this evening.
The game at Edgeley Park did not get off to such a gloomy start, with Stockport’s Corey O’Keeffe opening the scoring just after the half-hour mark.
But the visitors would reply just seven minutes later to equalise through the head of Dara Costelloe.
The initial suspension was intended to last 15 minutes, but half an hour later the officials were still conducting pitch inspections to gauge whether the match could go ahead, leaving the crowd stood waiting awkwardly.
But in the end, and to the amazement of many, the playing surface was deemed playable enough to allow the game to continue, with a restart being scheduled for 9:20pm.
