A SPANISH second-tier football match was abandoned after a fan collapsed in the stands and tragically died.

The Cueta vs Almeria match was halted after 18 minutes when the supporter was taken ill.

Red Cross Paramedics rushed in to help and provide treatment for around ten minutes.

That included the emergency services doing CPR.

The 73-year-old man was carried out of the Alfonso Murube Stadium on a stretcher amid applause to take him to hospital.

The match carried on with Almeria’s Adri Embarba cancelling out Kuki Zalazar’s early opener for the hosts.

But at half-time, it was confirmed that he had passed away, with local media naming him as a former chief of police, Manolo Carreto.

Discussions between the clubs and the officials took place at half-time.

And it was decided the referee would call the Segunda Division match off.

The news was announced over the PA system.

A new date will be found to play the second half – with November 26 a possibility if other fixtures can be moved.

Ceuta tweeted on Sunday afternoon: “We deeply regret the passing of one of our fans during the course of the match against UD Almeria.

“We send all our support and affection to the family and friends of the deceased.

“Rest in peace.”

Almeria added: “UD Almeria deeply regrets the death and sends its most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends. Rest in peace.”

And LaLiga also posted: “The match between @ADCeuta_FC
and @U_D_Almeria has been suspended due to the tragic death of a fan at the Alfonso Murube stadium.

“LaLiga extends its condolences to his family, friends, and the entire AD Ceuta fanbase.

“The new date will be announced shortly.”
