Sean Strickland knows he crossed a line in recent comments criticizing Dustin Poirier following Poirier’s embarrassing arrest for public drunkenness.
The former interim UFC lightweight champion was arrested at an airport on July 4 weekend at an Atlanta airport, where an intoxicated Poirier had an altercation with a police officer after being removed from a flight. Footage of the incident went viral and Poirier later issued an apology, and has spoken about how grateful is for how the officer handled the situation and his shame over how he behaved.
Strickland is now walking back his comments after claiming he had a conversation with Poirier.
“I spoke to Dustin and he is legitimately messed up by his actions,” Strickland wrote on Twitter. “I thought he ws just doing PR clean up tbh… I guess not everyone is a POS like me.
“So yeah, I repent and I am sorry Dustin.”
Strickland added he hopes Poirier doesn’t lose Bud Light as a sponsor.
Though Strickland is known for having zero filter, his criticism of Poirier was somewhat surprising given that the two-time UFC middleweight champion has himself spoken about having mental health struggles despite his success.
“I have everything — I’m rich, I’m famous,” Strickland said in an Instagram video in March 2024. “Like, I have everything I’ve ever f****** wanted, and I still am mentally unwell.”
Poirier, 37, retired from competition in July 2025 following a loss to longtime rival Max Holloway at UFC 318. He has made no indication he plans to come back, but has said in multiple interviews that the thought of fighting again remains on his mind.
