Well, this isn’t exactly what you want to hear if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan.
When asked about the Philadelphia Eagles’ energy on the sidelines during games by Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, star running back Saquon Barkley provided a concerning quote.
“Honestly, I think it’s been awful,” Barkley said. “Ask anybody, if they’re being honest, we all agree on that.”
This quote leads to the obvious follow-up question of why the energy has been bad. That’s obviously something the Eagles need to figure out, and quite frankly should have figured out well before Week 14 of the season.
But, according to Barkley, the lack of energy during games isn’t indicative of how the team is the rest of the time, so at least there’s that.
“But most importantly, I think the energy throughout in practice and walkthroughs and meetings been great,” Barkley said. “Now we got to carry that to game day.”
Overall, the Eagles just appear to be playing with a collective lack of joy this season. Perhaps it’s the weight and pressure of being the defending Super Bowl Champions and the expectations placed upon the team after winning it all earlier this year. Or perhaps it’s fatigue after playing such an extended schedule last season.
Whatever the reason, the Eagles need to figure out a way to increase the energy and joy that they operate with on game day. Their first opportunity to do so will come against the Chargers in Los Angeles on Monday Night Football.
The Eagles will be desperate for a win in L.A. after consecutive losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears. Philadelphia is still in pole position in the NFC East, but the Cowboys have turned up the heat in recent weeks. They had won three consecutive games before losing to the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football this week.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has apparently been more involved in offensive preparations for Philly this week, so we’ll see what impact, if any, that has against the Chargers.
