He has taken a hardline approach which saw several high-profile players banished to the bomb squad in the summer, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony all shipped out.

Garnacho was told his future at the club was over in a team meeting after United’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

In the same gathering Amorim also targeted Ugarte, a player he worked with at Sporting between 2021 and 2023.

Amorim slammed the midfielder for allowing his work rate to drop and suggested he had got comfortable since their first stint working together, according to The Athletic.

Ugarte had two big money moves since that first spell, first to Paris Saint-Germain and then to United a year ago.

But he has not lived up to expectations at Old Trafford and has started just two Prem matches this season, with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes preferred in central midfield.

It is understood Amorim’s criticism of the Uruguayan was well received by the Red Devils squad, who noted their manager’s criticism was firm but fair.

Amorim has tended to get his message across in a group setting rather than one-on-one, wanting his lessons to be heard by all.

He has also tried to foster a hardworking environment, which has been aided by the signings of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

They fit with Amorim’s philosophy, with Ugarte revealing how much emphasis his boss puts on teamwork.

He said: “[Ruben] always says about the communication.

“Speak to everyone and work as a team and try to recover the ball as soon as possible. I think tonight, not only me, the team played really well.”
