Robert Garcia believes Conor Benn’s return to 147 pounds leaves him at a disadvantage against Ryan Garcia. The veteran trainer expects Ryan’s hand speed and punching power to produce a knockout when they meet for the WBC welterweight title on September 12. He also believes Ryan would defeat Devin Haney again if a rematch is made.
Robert said Benn faces a difficult assignment after competing at heavier weights, arguing the weight cut will leave him vulnerable against one of boxing’s fastest punchers.
“I think Ryan catches him and hurts him and knocks him out,” Garcia said to Fighthype. “Conor Benn’s a warrior, but he hasn’t made 147 in a long time. I think that’s going to hurt him. That’s going to really hurt him to get to 147. Ryan hits hard and is unbelievably fast.”
Garcia also weighed in on a potential second fight between Ryan and Haney. He expects fans to embrace another meeting after their first bout and believes Ryan still owns the mental edge.
“I wouldn’t mind watching that,” Garcia said. “Everybody wants to see that. Ryan already beat him once. Ryan already has the confidence, the blueprint, and Devin also has that against him. This guy got me good, dropped me a few times psychologically. I pick Ryan.”
Haney must first defend his WBO welterweight title against Keyshawn Davis, and Garcia likes the champion’s chances there as well. He praised Davis’ talent and determination but pointed to Haney’s size, jab, and experience at welterweight as the deciding factors.
“I give all the advantages to Haney,” Garcia said. “He’s just too talented, smart, great jab, big guy. When it comes to the day of the fight, he gets big. That might be a disadvantage for Keyshawn.”
Robert sees Ryan defeating Benn and Haney turning back Davis. In his view, Ryan would remain the favorite in a second meeting after already solving the puzzle once inside the ring.
