Ricky Rubio has reportedly turned down the chance to join Panathinaikos despite a personal approach from head coach Zeljko Obradovic.
According to AS, Obradovic personally contacted the veteran point guard in an attempt to convince him to join the Greek powerhouse ahead of the 2026-27 season. The report adds that Panathinaikos offered Rubio a salary of around €900,000, significantly more than he currently earns at Joventut Badalona.
However, Rubio reportedly made it clear that he is happy in Badalona and has no intention of leaving.
The 35-year-old returned to professional basketball after stepping away from the game to focus on his mental health, first in 2024 and then again in 2025. According to the Spanish outlet, he now wants to remain close to home and continue his career with Joventut rather than embark on a new challenge abroad.
Panathinaikos has been active in the market this summer after bringing back Obradovic, signing Isaac Bonga, Brancou Badio and Guerschon Yabusele, while also extending Juancho Hernangomez through 2030.
