AEK was impressive against Malaga, taking an informal revenge for last year’s lost semifinal by winning 78-65 and is now one step from the final.
RaiQuan Gray gave it his all on the court, being the player with the most minutes in the game at 33’45”, scoring 10 points (4/7 two-pointers, 0/3 three-pointers, 2/4 free throws), with 2 rebounds and 1 assist.
The 26-year-old forward spoke to “Cosmote TV”, stating that AEK’s only goal from the start was first place and nothing else.
He specifically said:
“We want one more win, that’s our mentality. We didn’t come here to win just one game. It’s a good victory for the club and the fans, but our mentality is to take the trophy, not to finish 2nd or 3rd. If you’re not first, you’re last. We’ll celebrate today and prepare for Saturday’s match.
The coach did an amazing job preparing us, we watched videos and stayed focused. We knew Malaga would play hard in the second half because they are back-to-back champions, but I’m happy we won.”
When asked about the final, he said:
“Win. That’s our mentality. It might not seem like I’m happy, but I’m thrilled with the win and that we went a bit further than last year. But we came here to win the trophy. No one celebrates second place.”
Dragan Sakota gave his opinion after a win
AEK’s coach Dragan Sakota also spoke after a huge win of his team.
“We played great defense against an offensive team that scores close to 100 points, with many options, good in transition and long shots. Our transition defense made the difference. We have confidence both as a team and individually,” said Dragan Sakota to Cosmote.
He continued: “When you’re in a Final Four, it’s essential to have confidence, to play for your team and yourself. It’s something that can change your life and career in the future.”
As for Rytas, he stated: “They are a good team, as shown in the semifinal against Tenerife, where they controlled the game from start to finish. Our issue is also fatigue, as we have key players who are forced to play over 20 minutes. I don’t believe there is a favorite; it will be a great Final.”
“As a coach, I am fulfilled”
Dragan Sakota also talked about his coaching career, given that he won his first title at the age of 25: “After so many years (53), I no longer have the pressure I once had; I have nothing to prove to anyone.
Every match and every competition is different; compared to last year, we didn’t have the weapons to beat them and reach the cup. With the team we have built, we worked and improved the team, we beat Alba twice, eliminated Badalona, and now Malaga.
As a coach, I am fulfilled, and that gives me the calm and energy to stand for 40 minutes and coach; I can stop whenever I want now.”
