NOVAK DJOKOVIC has made up with Piers Morgan nearly four years after he was branded a “liar” and a “cheat” by the English broadcaster during his Covid deportation drama.

In January 2022, the Serbian tennis superstar was dramatically booted out of Melbourne by Australian immigration officials because he had not had his Covid jabs.

Having inoculations for coronavirus was a prerequisite for entry into the country back then, at the height of the pandemic crisis, unless you had medical exemption.

In an unsuccessful legal challenge he claimed he had the necessary paperwork to be exempt from Australia’s vaccine mandate, but Djokovic, 38, twice had his visa cancelled upon arrival.

And despite being a multi-millionaire sportsman, he was dumped into an immigration detention hotel because he was deemed to be a public health risk.

In the end, he was not allowed to play in the tournament, which he has won a record 10 times at Melbourne Park, and was unceremoniously placed on a plane back to Europe.

Morgan, the former newspaper editor and broadcaster, was a vocal critic of Djokovic, saying on TV: “If I want to go to America, I have to take a test and show my vaccination status. That’s it.

“So he shouldn’t be allowed to play, right? It stops you from dying. I mean that’s the whole point of the vaccine.

“He’s also a role model who will definitely deter a lot of people who perhaps should have the jab.”

On social media, Morgan – who has close to nine million followers on X – was even stronger and critical with his views.

He said in one post: “BREAKING: Covid rule cheat, immigration form liar & anti-vaxxer icon Novak Djokovic loses final appeal against deportation & will be thrown out of Australia without being able to compete in Aus Open. Good.”

Yet in a teaser trailer released ahead of the latest episode of the Piers Morgan Uncensored show, which will air fully on YouTube on Tuesday November 11, Morgan begins the chat with Djokovic by saying he wants to make “an apology”.

In response, Djokovic said: “What you said, it speaks volumes about the person that you are. I’m just saying I’m not like that.”

The wide-ranging hour-long chat with the 24-time Grand Slam champion discusses his decorated career and his future plans.

Djokovic admits that, with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner dominating the landscape of men’s tennis, it is going to be difficult to win a 25th singles major.

Despite reaching the semi-finals of all four Slams this year, he has invariably fallen short in best-of-five set matches with the world’s top two.

Former SunSport columnist Morgan, 60, asked: “Is part of you also thinking, I’m not sure I can compete against these guys at this level now?”

The Belgrade-born star said: “To your point, yes, I do have more doubts that I can win Slams, particularly against these two guys.”

Djokovic reveals that it would be “a dream” to play his 11-year-old son Stefan in a professional match but he would not go easy, laughing: “I would kick his (beep)…”
