Michael Morales has built a championship résumé and if the cards fall just right, could be getting that title opportunity sooner rather than later.
The undefeated Ecuadorian welterweight told MMA Junkie he will step to the scale as the official backup for the UFC 330 main event between 170-pound champion and No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Islam Makhachev and Ian Machado Garry in Philadelphia on Aug. 15. No official announcement has been made regarding Morales’ status for the event, though he remains unbooked after scoring two wins in 2025.
Morales (19-0) has won all seven of his fights since joining the UFC off of Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021. His past three wins have all come by knockout over ranked opposition, with Sean Brady, Gilbert Burns, and Neil Magny all having failed to make it out of the first round against the 27-year-old.
Makhachev is no stranger to opponent switch-ups. Ahead of his fourth and final defense as lightweight champion at UFC 311, Makhachev saw challenger Arman Tsarukyan swapped out at the last second for Renato Moicano when Tsarukyan was forced to withdraw due to a back injury. Makhachev defeated Moicano and went on to vacate the lightweight title before going on to defeat Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight championship at UFC 322 this past November. He defends the 170-pound title for the first time when he faces Garry at UFC 330.
Garry sports a 10-1 UFC record, with his lone loss coming at the hands of Shavkat Rakhmonov. He bounced back from that defeat with wins over former champion Belal Muhammad and top contender Carlos Prates to earn his shot at Makhachev.
UFC 330 takes place at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on Aug. 15. In the co-main event, strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern fights Gillian Robertson.
