It was their 11th defeat in 29 league matches after appointing Cifuentes last summer.

And the Spaniard has now been shown the door, with Leicester appointing former player and Premier League title winner Andy King as interim boss for this weekend’s clash against Charlton.

Leicester City Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, who will now look for a new permanent gaffer, said: “This has been a difficult decision and not one I have taken lightly.

“I would like to thank Martí for the total commitment he has shown during his time at Leicester City.

“He gave everything to the role and worked tirelessly to help us achieve our targets.

“However, I believe this is the right step at this time to improve performances and results, and to act in the best interests of Leicester City Football Club.

“Martí leaves with our thanks and our best wishes for the future.”

Cifuentes was hired by Leicester in July to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy after spending 18 months at QPR.

He leaves after 11 wins, nine draws and 11 defeats from 31 games.

King will now take charge of preparations for Saturday’s home clash against Charlton.

The Foxes face Birmingham after before a double header against Southampton in the Championship and then the FA Cup.

A new permanent gaffer could be in place by then, with Leicester chiefs beginning their hunt immediately.

Russell Martin, Robbie Keane and Mark Robins are among those favoured by the bookies, with names including Gary Rowett, Lee Carsley and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also in the mix.
