Rosario presented the kind of danger Chavez had not encountered. The WBA champion had knocked out Livingstone Bramble in two rounds the previous year and possessed genuine power in both hands. Rosario Could Not Keep Chavez Away

Rosario had success during the third and fourth rounds. He landed several hard punches and briefly forced Chavez onto the ropes, but nothing discouraged the advancing challenger. Chavez looked almost untouched as he drove Rosario into a corner during the 11th. With the champion taking another sustained attack, his corner threw in the towel. Referee Richard Steele stopped it at 2:38. All three judges had Chavez far in front: 98-92, 99-91, and 100-92.
The performance made Chavez a two-division champion and erased every question surrounding his move to lightweight. He had taken one of boxing’s most feared punchers, neutralized his power, and broken him down without ever needing a knockdown.
