Renato Moicano remains busy after winning a UFC main event fight against Chris Duncan on April 4, this time debuting as a fight promoter. The former UFC title challenger announced after his recent win at the Meta APEX that he will produce a MMA event for the first time, and the date is set for May 23 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Money Moicano MMA 1 will take place at the Cornerman gym in Sao Paulo, and the UFC talent hopes to build a platform to help the next generation of the sport.
“It’s going to be crazy just like my livestreams, but with CABMMA [overseeing it],” Moicano told MMA Fighting. “If you’re going to watch the event in person or live, you already know there will be jokes, there will be chaos, but when the cage closes, it’s a fight. You’ll have people about to fight on the Contender Series, people who’ve already fought there, prospects, top-level fighters who are about to reach the next level. Money Moicano MMA will be showcasing these guys.”
The card will be headlined by DWCS veteran Jair Farias against Ricardo Almeida. Moicano teases that fans “have no idea what’s coming,” including amateur bouts between subscribers of his YouTube channel.
“I want people to go all out in there so the fans at home enjoy it,” Moicano said.
Popular in the MMA sphere for shouting he wants money after fights, Moicano said his intention with the fight promotion is not profit off the event itself.
“I’m not going to take any money from this event,” Moicano said. “‘So you’re a good guy, Moicano? A saint?’ No, man. But I’ll be streaming it on my channel. For Charles’ fight [vs. Max Holloway] we had 30,000 people watching live. How many people can we get live for this event? That brings me more sponsors. It’s that snowball effect I always talk about: you build an audience, take that money and turn it into a good cause. You create a system and everyone wins. Great fights, quality entertainment, and helping people in need.”
“My idea for an MMA event is that a lot of the money goes back to the athletes,” he continued. “So we can offer bigger bonuses and fighters earn more. But for that to happen, the event has to be profitable. I don’t want to do what some other organizations do, like the PFL, where they start by promising a lot of money and then can’t sustain it. So how am I going to make money? Not from the event, it’ll be through streaming. Right now, making money isn’t my priority. What matters is creating content. My dream as a promoter is to build an awesome product to have an amazing live stream — and from that, I’ll get sponsors and other opportunities.”
Moicano said that his plans for the future include creating a platform to allow underprivileged kids to seek a better life through martial arts.
“We’re also going to run some projects to help people in need,” Moicano said. “Food donations, equipment donations. What we make from the live stream, like superchats and everything the channel generates, we’ll choose an institution to support. We’ll also create an institute down the line to secure funding for kids. My goal is to grow the sport in the way I know how. I know the power sports have. Not just in my life, but in many others. [Francisco Trinaldo] ’Massaranduba’ earned everything he has through fighting. How many Charles [Oliveira], Massaranduba, Moicanos are out there in Brazil? We’re going to help find them through entertainment and sport.”
