During today’s spring training contest between the Atlanta Braves and the Tampa Bay Rays, Atlanta’s organizational depth when it comes to their starting pitching may have taken yet another hit. Joey Wentz had to be carted off the field during today’s game with an apparent injury to his leg — probably his knee.
There’s no video of the incident but from what we can gather on the radio, Joey Wentz hurt himself trying to cover first base. He stayed on the ground for quite a bit and had to be carted off as a result of the incident.
Bowman is right about the fact that while Wentz was carted off, he was still able to walk around. In fact, Wentz was standing up and attempted to walk off the field under his own power but was probably advised to just go ahead and take the cart ride to the dugout, at least.
Here’s hoping that this is just a day-to-day thing for Joey Wentz. Wentz was right in the thick of the competition to make it into the starting rotation for Opening Day but at the same time, you don’t want to see Atlanta’s organizational depth get any thinner than it is near the major league level at this point. Hopefully Wentz will be able to return to action sooner rather than later and we’ll have any updates for you as they become available.
