Catterall says he wants the next fight quickly after defeating Shakhram Giyasov to capture the WBA welterweight belt in Egypt

Jack Catterall immediately called for a fight with Rolando “Rolly” Romero after defeating Shakhram Giyasov on Saturday night to win the WBA regular welterweight title in Egypt. Catterall said he wants to return quickly and believes Romero could now become the next step in his push toward a bigger championship fight.

Catterall made it clear afterward that he wants the next step quickly rather than sitting inactive with the belt.

“My understanding is there’s something in place where he’s got to fight within a certain time period,” Catterall said to the Stomping Ground channel after the fight.

“I feel good. I feel fresh. No injuries. So bring on Rolly, bring on whoever. I’ll be back in the gym next week waiting on him.”

The win capped a long climb for Catterall, who spent years trying to work his way back into world title contention after the controversial decision loss to Josh Taylor in 2022. Although he later defeated Taylor in their rematch, that fight did not come with championship belts attached.

Saturday’s victory finally gave him a version of a world title, even if the WBA’s handling of the welterweight division has already drawn criticism after Romero was upgraded earlier this week.

Catterall said he still believes there is more to come despite the dominant performance against Giyasov.

“I’m my worst critic. I’ll go back and watch it and be like, ‘Why didn’t I stop him? Why didn’t I do this?” said Catterall.

“I want to be better. I’ll be back in the gym next week. I feel good. I’ve no injuries, and I will be better, and I’ll keep on winning.”

Catterall also admitted that finally winning a title carried personal meaning after years of setbacks and close calls at the top level.

“I think I needed that. It felt good, and that was the piece of my world title tonight,” said Jack.
