Marvel Rivals wants to be the Iron Man of the first-person shooter genre. To make an incredibly hulking experience, adding crossplay and cross-progression would be heroic. We’ve got the details you need on these features.
Crossplay has become an integral part of modern gaming, particularly for online-only games like Marvel Rivals—but other games have encountered issues when offering this feature, so it’s not guaranteed.
It’s a similar situation with cross-platform, allowing players to play without losing progress on any platform. It would be nice, for example, to take your character progress from PC and play it on console on a big TV while you relax on the couch with some snacks. And when I say “you,” I mean me. That’s exactly what I would like to do.
If you want to know all the details about both features and whether they’re available in Marvel Rivals, look no further.
Does Marvel Rivals have crossplay or cross-platform play?
Yes, Marvel Rivals offers crossplay on PS5, Xbox, and PC. However, it varies on your platform and the game mode you are playing—PC players cannot crossplay with those on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in the Competitive Mode.
In Competitive Mode, PC players can only play with other PC gamers, while those on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 can play together. Though this may be a frustrating development for those who want to play with friends on other platforms, it’s a situation that we should all understand.
Crossplay being off in ranked mode also seems to be a balance issue. The different inputs available on PC and console may create an unbalanced situation in the game’s sweatiest mode, which could also be considered a quality-of-life issue.
The good news, however, is that the door is not shut on crossplay entirely, as PC players can play with Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 players in Quick Match, Conquest, Custom Games, and the Practice vs AI modes.
Does Marvel Rivals support cross-platform progression?
Marvel Rivals does not have cross-progression enabled, but the feature will likely come further down the game’s lifespan—although no dates for the release of such a feature have been shared.
In an interview with Dot Esports in December 2024, creative director Guangyun “Guangguang” Chen confirmed that cross-progression is in the works, but it’s not a simple process.
“Cross-progression involves a lot of platform-specific rules, we’re still looking at it and how to solve it,” Chen said. “Once the team is ready, once we’ve figured it out, we’ll be sharing to everyone and players will be the first to know.”
Previously, speaking to TheGamer at the Tokyo Game Show in October 2024, game director Guangyun Chen confirmed that the game would launch with “no cross-progression,” with a “final tech check” on the cards before such a feature is implemented and admitted “the workload is a lot more than we thought at the beginning.” Alas, it did not make it to the game’s launch window, but it will be coming at some point.
Stay tuned to Dot Esports to learn more about when cross-progression is coming to Marvel Rivals, hopefully sooner rather than later. Because I really want my couch and my snacks as I whiff my third ultimate of the game.
