ALVARO MORATA was so unhappy on Sunday that he asked to be subbed off for Como FC – despite being the captain.

Despite his years of experience, 33-year-old Morata wasn’t able to stay level headed as he came out second best in a battle with another former Premier League flop.

So angry was Morata with how Como’s eventual 0-0 draw with Cagliari was going – and more specifically his tussle with Yerry Mina – that he took it upon himself to get away from the action.

Morata was booked in the 61st minute for a foul on Mina and was swiftly replaced by Anastasios Douvikas moments later after making it clear he wished to go off.

Pre-empting the red mist, Morata took off the captain’s armband and requested for boss Cesc Fabregas to remove him from the field.

Reports in the Italian media seem to confirm that Morata’s actions were in response to his vexation at Mina.

After running into the Colombian whilst chasing a back-pass, Morata was visibly annoyed at the situation and immediately turned to the bench, shaking his head and making the sub action with his hands.

He stayed on the pitch briefly before realising that the sub was actually about to happen, at which point he stopped stewing over his frustrating night and trudged to the dugout.

Mina, 31, had done a good job of thwarting Como – who play in one of the most scenic stadiums in football – as Cagliari held out for a point with just 25 per cent of the ball.

It is the second Serie A game in a row that Morata and his side have failed to score with the Spaniard yet to find the net for his latest club.

Former Chelsea and Real Madrid star Morata joined on loan from AC Milan in the summer but has not been able to make a massive impact, only assisting once in 13 appearances.

His evening in front of goal was summed up by missing one big chance, while he committed three fouls and ended up consumed by Mina instead.

The Colombian centre-back left Everton for free after five years on the books at Goodison Park in 2023.

He lasted much longer than Morata, who only made it to the end of two seasons at Chelsea before being sold.

Mina played 99 times for the Toffees after joining from Barcelona, 86 of which were in the Prem.

Morata was at Stamford Bridge for 72 matches but he struggled to live up to the hype and early 2017-18 form.

He has since been on a whirlwind tour of Europe, playing for Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Milan, Galatasaray, and now Como.

The latter are more than holding their own in their second season back in the big time as they sit seventh, just outside of the European places in a condensed table.
