Filip Hrgovic (20-1, 15 KOs) made quick work of Dave Allen (25-9-2, 18 KOs) on Saturday night, stopping the hometown heavyweight in the third round after Allen’s trainer Jamie Moore threw in the towel during a sustained attack.
The fight was one-sided from the opening bell at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster. Hrgovic established control immediately behind a stiff jab and sharp right hands, repeatedly backing Allen onto the ropes while mixing in left hooks to the body. Allen attempted to answer with overhand rights, but most of his shots missed cleanly as Hrgovic controlled the distance and pace.
Round two followed the same pattern. Hrgovic continued pumping out hard jabs while landing chopping right hands and short hooks on the inside. Allen spent much of the round pinned along the ropes as Hrgovic steadily broke him down with body work and combinations upstairs. By the end of the round, Allen was already absorbing heavy punishment without offering much resistance offensively.
Hrgovic closed the show in the third. A hard body shot early in the round immediately put Allen back under pressure before Hrgovic doubled up with hooks to the body and head. Allen was soon trapped along the ropes again as Hrgovic unloaded a series of clean power shots, including right hands and hooks that left Allen badly hurt.
Seeing Allen taking sustained punishment with little chance of turning the fight around, Moore stepped in and threw in the towel to halt the contest.
The win gives Hrgovic a needed rebound performance after his stoppage loss to Daniel Dubois last year. Allen entered the fight riding a late-career revival run, but the gulf in size, speed, and power quickly became clear once the opening round began.
“What he did was he found himself a future. I’ll be honest with you. Tonight, we knew it was going to be tough, but what tonight did was that his family will be secure forever,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to DAZN Boxing. “What Allen has done in the last year was all about making sure that whatever Dave Allen does in the future, he can live with a smile on his face.”
