Fighters suffer injuries all the time but rarely do any produce more stomach-churning results than when a broken leg happens in a middle of a fight.
That’s what unfolded in Brazil on Saturday at SFT 58 during an exchange between featherweights Pedro Morais and Igor Elizeu. Just over a minute into the opening round, the fighters traded leg kicks but one ended in devastating fashion.
After Morais uncorked a kick, Elizeu fired back with one of his own but as soon his connected, his bone snapped and twisted backwards as he tried to place his foot back down on the canvas. The horrific injury saw the referee rush in immediately to stop the contest as Elizeu was down on the ground in obvious agony from the injury.
While not common, similar injuries have occurred in promotions like the UFC — perhaps none more famous that Anderson Silva snapping his leg during a fight against Chris Weidman back in 2013. In a cruel twist, Weidman then suffered almost the exact identical injury when his leg broke throwing a kick against Uriah Hall in a fight back in 2021.
Thankfully both Silva and Weidman were able to recover from the injuries and return to action.
Here’s hoping the same for Elizeu after he endured a similarly gruesome broken leg in his fight on Saturday.
