Tag team wrestling has long been an important aspect of the industry, with some fans even preferring tag matches over singles. In addition to that, tag teams paved the way for some of the biggest stars in the industry, like Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. While it remains a crucial part of wrestling today, Eric Bischoff has warned against it’s over-emphasis.
“It’s inefficient. It’s, for the most part, ineffective. It’s very, very expensive. It’s twice as expensive to put on a tag team match as it is a singles match. And then it makes it even harder to tell a really good story,” he expressed during an episode of “83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff,” stating that this is an opinion he’s held since 1994.
Contrary to WWE, AEW seems to be placing more focus on its tag team and trios divisions, including the recent additions of New Level (FKA New Day) and the Motor City Machine Guns. Rather than labeling this an all-encompassing bad decision, Bischoff noted that Tony Khan might simply have different priorities that aren’t financially motivated.
“If they think loading up the tag teams is going to create more interest for them, good for them, because there’s going to be a lot of [teams] available,” he said. “The reason WWE is de-emphasizing tag teams is the same reason that I publicly stated I was doing in 1994: it doesn’t make financial sense. Now, if you don’t care that it doesn’t make financial sense, then it’s nice to have a deep tag team roster, because you can fill a lot of time with it.”
