Aston Villa believe that the decision to move is based only on football, as the former Arsenal academy player wants more game time.

Villa boss Unai Emery rates the forward, but considers him second-place to England international Ollie Watkins.

Malen joined the Villa in January 2025 from Borussia Dortmund for a deal worth £21m.

He will leave the Premier League after just 35 appearances, including seven starts.

Since his arrival at Villa he has scored ten goals and provided two assists across 46 games across all competitions.

The sale will represent a profit for the Birmingham side as they bank £27m for the winger.

Malen – who began his career at PSV Eindhoven – will become Villa’s seventh most expensive sale of all time.

Villa currently sit tied on points with second-place Manchester City as they head into the latter half of the Premier League season.

Only Morgan Rogers has scored more for Villa in 2025/26, netting seven times across all competitions.

The Dutchman will join Roma who are currently fifth in Serie A under Gian Piero Gasperini.
