Shakur Stevenson got triggered during the face-off with Teofimo Lopez Jr. today when Teo Sr. told him, “Crawford can’t fight for you” on January 31st. That was like waving a red flag in front of a little bull, as Stevenson’s eyes widened and started firing back at Lopez Sr.
The Crawford Trigger Point
One could tell that Shakur lost it for a second when Lopes Sr. brought up his role model, Crawford, because that’s the guy that he patterned his fighting style after. He learned his game by watching Crawford fight, but he lacked the power to be the perfect 2.0 copy.
Lopez Sr. did most of the trash-talking for his son, WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo, today, ripping Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) over his weak resume and telling him that he’s got to “prove” all the things he’s been saying about himself.
Lopez Plan: Mental Warfare
Lopez Jr. sounded like his plan for today was to throw Stevenson off by talking weird stuff about how he can mess with his private parts, and how he’s going to “f***” him on January 31st. Shakur looked embarrassed and couldn’t think of a good response.
“It’s my time. I’ve been waiting on this forever. Thank you,” said Shakur Stevenson to Teofimo Lopez Sr. during the face-off with Teofimo Jr. at today’s kickoff press conference in New York.
“Prove It” — The Challenge
“Now, you got to prove it,” said Teofimo Sr.
“Oh, you going to see,” said Shakur. “You can’t fight for him.”
“Crawford can’t fight for you,” said Teofimo Sr.
“I don’t care. I don’t need him,” said Stevenson about his mentor Terence Crawford.
“He’s in trouble,” said Lopez Sr. “The comes from a different breed, baby.”
