FORMER Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has died at the age of 79.

The American and his business partner, George Gillett, purchased a 50 per cent stake in the Reds in 2007 before selling to Fenway Sports Group three years later.

A statement released by the Hicks family reads: “Of everything he accomplished in his remarkable life, Tom Hicks’s most cherished title was, ‘Dad.’

“No matter the trials and tribulations he faced in life, he was constant in his generosity and love for his family.

“He remains a guiding force for our family, and we are deeply honoured to continue expanding his legacy.

“Although we are devastated by this loss, we are profoundly grateful to have been his children.”

Hicks is said to have died peacefully in Dallas, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday.

Hicks and Gillett’s Anfield reign was marred by financial difficulties and they became widely unpopular with fans.

They left after racking up debts of £237million and having failed to deliver on promises of a stadium revamp.

Hicks also owned NHL team the Dallas Stars for 16 years, as well as baseball outfit the Texas Rangers for 12 years.

The Stars won consecutive Central Division titles during Hicks’ reign, in 1997 and 1998.

And they followed that up with a Stanley Cup triumph the following year.

The Rangers also enjoyed success under Hicks’ stewardship, winning a trio of American League West Division titles and finishing runners-up in the 2010 World Series.

Hicks is survived by wife of 35 years Cinda and his six children.
