Chris Padilla is hoping to get his UFC 327 victory back.
Padilla has submitted a formal request to the Florida Athletic Commission following Saturday’s matchup with Marquel Mederos in Miami, Padila’s management team confirmed to MMA Fighting.
Padilla was originally announced the winner via majority decision — with a pair of 29-27 scorecards, and a 28-28. But around an hour later, it was revealed that two of the judges scored it 28-28, which resulted in the majority decision win being changed to a majority draw.
Padilla also gave his thoughts on the situation in an exclusive statement to MMA Fighting.
“I believe I won that fight clearly under the scoring criteria; in damage, control, and overall impact,” Padilla wrote. “It’s tough to accept that the fight was even close on the scorecards, especially when the performance spoke for itself along with the point deduction given to my opponent.
“I respect the judges, but I stand by what I did in there, and I believe this decision deserves to be reviewed.
The result was puzzling, as the overwhelming majority seemed to feel as if Padilla clearly won the fight, not to mention, Mederos was deducted a point in Round 3 for multiple eye pokes. In fact, MMA Decisions saw all 14 media members score the bout for Padilla, with more than half scoring the bout 30-26 for “Taco.”
It is unknown at this time if it was an error by Bruce Buffer reading of the scorecards and announcing the results after the bout, or if Buffer was given the incorrect information by the judges and commission.
The protest is under review, and a result is expected sometime over the next week.
