William Zepeda had barely finished celebrating his first world title before Adrien Broner offered a blunt opinion on how the new WBC lightweight champion would fare against Gervonta Davis.
Zepeda captured the vacant WBC title Saturday night with a unanimous decision over Lamont Roach Jr. His improved movement and distance control caught even Terence Crawford off guard, but Broner wasn’t convinced that approach would succeed against Davis.
“Now, he’s a champ. Tank would knock him out cold. I’m talking about an ugly one,” Broner said on social media.
Whether fans ever see that fight is another question.
Davis has not fought since 2025, and nothing suggests Zepeda sits at the top of his list when he returns to the ring. One of boxing’s biggest attractions still has several major opportunities available.
A meeting with Shakur Stevenson carries championship implications and years of history. Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney remain among boxing’s biggest commercial draws, while Conor Benn’s popularity in the United Kingdom offers another sizable event.
Zepeda also has unfinished business at lightweight. Interim WBC champion Jadier Herrera was bypassed when the sanctioning body ordered Zepeda and Roach to fight for the vacant title. Herrera now has a strong case for the next shot at the belt.
Stylistically, Zepeda presents a difficult matchup. His nonstop punch volume, body attack and conditioning would force Davis to fight at a pace unlike many of his recent opponents. Davis also went the distance with both Roach and Isaac Cruz, making Broner’s prediction of a knockout far from certain.
Broner’s opinion reflects one view of a matchup many fans would like to see. Whether Davis ever decides to pursue Zepeda remains a separate question.
