In a season-ending press conference that lasted 67 minutes, Miami Heat president Pat Riley made his future and the team’s direction unmistakably clear.
The 81-year-old executive quelled retirement rumors with characteristic fire, stating, “I’m not going to retire. I’m not going to resign. I’m not going to step aside,” he stated. “I love what I’m doing. I love the people I am working with. I love competition. I love this franchise.”
Addressing the roster, Riley focused heavily on the team’s defensive anchor, Bam Adebayo. When asked about potentially trading the center this offseason, he stressed his commitment to keeping him, saying, “Unless somebody gave me eight picks and Wembanyama.”
He asserted that Adebayo ‘deserves more help’ and outlined a strategy to bolster the lineup without compromising the organization’s long-term health.
“We’ll try hard to aggressively pursue opportunities in free agency and the draft,” he mentioned. “You got all summer to work on other parts of your roster. I’m not going to make a stupid move that saddles us for years to come. We’ve always managed the tax extremely well. You don’t want to be in any area where you encumber your roster. Player value creation is important, and that’s why you got to keep them on the floor.”
Riley explicitly refused to embrace a tanking strategy, labeling it ‘insanity’ and vowing to quit if ever ordered to pursue a radical rebuild. While he noted that the team must show ‘discipline’ regarding an extension for Tyler Herro, who is set for a minor foot procedure, he remains encouraged by the roster’s flexibility heading into the 2026-27 season.
The presser took a sharp turn when addressing the legal troubles of former Heat guard Terry Rozier, who faces federal charges of sports bribery and honest services fraud. He used his harshest words for the act of gambling, calling it, “The most stupid thing that a player could do. Absolutely just stupid.”
Regarding the team’s European talent, Serbia’s Nikola Jovic and Lithuania’s Kasparas Jakucionis remain under contract. However, Sweden’s Pelle Larsson is subject to a team option, and Italy’s Simone Fontecchio is slated to test the open market as an unrestricted free agent.
