Abdullah Mason and William Zepeda have already given The Fight two successful main events. Putting them together for a lightweight unification would give the new series something it needs: a natural connection from one show to the next.
Mason stopped Albert Bell on July 4 to capture the WBO lightweight title in the debut edition of The Fight. Zepeda followed on August 1, defeating Lamont Roach by a wide 12-round decision to win the vacant WBC belt. Now the obvious fight is sitting there, and boxing journalist Jake Donovan believes matching the two champions would help establish the series.
“Not sure if ‘The Fight’ can generate the same impact that ‘Boxing After Dark’ had during its prime, but this fight would go a very long way to further validating the series. Both winning big on its first two shows, a head-on collision is the natural next course of action,” said Donovan on X.
There are no negotiations for Mason-Zepeda at this stage, but Mason has already made it clear that he likes the matchup. The 22-year-old recently described Zepeda as the type of opponent who can give him a career-defining fight. Zepeda brings relentless pressure and an enormous punch output, presenting Mason with a much tougher physical test than Bell did.
The first two broadcasts introduced Mason and Zepeda separately. Putting them together next would give viewers a reason to follow the series from one card to another rather than treating each event as an unrelated main event.
Boxing After Dark developed its reputation by giving fighters difficult fights and bringing successful performers back against increasingly dangerous opposition. The Fight doesn’t need to duplicate HBO’s old formula, but Mason against Zepeda would be a strong place to start building its own.
