Michigan State hockey bounced back on Saturday night and earned a massive win over their rival Michigan, 3-1.
After a 3-0 Friday night loss in East Lansing, the Spartans traveled to Ann Arbor for a rematch against the Wolverines. The Spartans avenged their Friday night performance with the win.
Credit freshman Anthony Romani with making his first rivalry moment a big one. With the Spartans trailing 1-0 with 1:22 remaining in the second period, Romani found his first of the night, getting a greasy goal in front of the net. The game tying goal was assisted by Patrick Geary and Gavin O’Connell.
It didn’t take long in the third period for the Spartans to get their first lead of the weekend series. Just 1:44 into the final frame, Romani got his second of the night, this time being assisted by Cayden Lindstrom and Colin Ralph. The Spartans led 2-1.
That lead would hold serve for the Spartans in the third period, and MSU would get the nail in the coffin marker when Porter Martone scored an empty netter with 1:09 remaining in the game. That goal was assisted by Travis Shoudy and Charlie Stramel, and gave MSU the decisive 3-1 lead.
The 3-1 win would earn the Spartans a weekend split with the Wolverines.
Now, some time off for MSU will ensue, with the team not playing another game until Dec. 28, when the Spartans will face Ferris State in the Great Lakes Invitational.
